Users Stopping Slimming Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using such treatments should be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have stopped the medication report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you become ravenous," described one woman.

The struggle is worsened if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle management.
