Pick of the Week
The Substance Film
Coralie Fargeat's daring satire tackles the demanding standards for female beauty as well as the dreaded aspects of growing older. Hollywood star Demi Moore offers an inspired portrayal playing Elisabeth, a mature actress reduced to presenting a fitness program on the small screen. Pushed out due to her deceitful superior her manager Harvey, she turns to a mysterious and terrifying treatment called the Substance. The Woman in Cabin 10
This classic whodunit story stars Knightley as Laura, an ace reporter who decides to take some time off from reporting on world issues to board an opulent ship accompanied by a gravely sick Scandinavian billionaire and charitable figure, her spouse, plus additional affluent passengers. But after an unknown lady falls into the sea during the evening and the entire crew claims she was never there, Laura's investigative instincts kick in. Available now, the Netflix platform
Presence
Soderbergh challenges his directorial skills with this innovative ghostly tale captured wholly from the perspective of a ghost. When a household including mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe occupies their recent residence, the filming device – as the unseen entity – follows them around. The daughter appears conscious of the ghostly being, and it looks like protective of her. However, the motive remains? The premise is enjoyable that avoids overstaying, with a twist you might not see coming. October 11th, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
Cage wholeheartedly adopts his unique fame through this autobiographical spoof. He portrays a self-obsessed Hollywood actor playing himself who agrees to a million-dollar gig to attend a celebration in Mallorca for the rich superfan Javi. Recruited by the CIA to investigate the potential kingpin, Cage's unique performing skills proves useful. This Saturday, evening, on Channel 4
The Black Phone
The director's locked-room horror holds up well despite the lack of a sequel. Taking place in 1970s Colorado, a series of kidnappings has left the youth frightened. When Finney gets captured by the kidnapper and held captive in a basement, he anticipates a fatal end. Yet the old telephone on the wall keeps ringing, with spooky callers providing assistance, while the intuitive nightmares of Gwen, his sister might rescue him. A genuinely scary movie. October 11th, 10.50pm, Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the conflict between faith and wealth, the victory is clear for Mammon in Showalter's delightfully tacky true story about the fallen TV preacher and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield plays the greedy Jim, who states at the beginning, claiming divine approval for wealth. Both individuals set about monetising the nation's religious faith. It's an extravaganza of bad interior design, excessive cosmetics and insincerity, though Jessica Chastain achieves to show Tammy Faye in a likable light. October 14th, late night, on Film4
The Spy Mystery
This week's second offering by the same director is a spy mystery as tight similar to the collars sported by Fassbender's UK spy. He is tasked with uncovering a traitor inside the organization from a group of five – among them is his spouse. Both actors are experts of deadpan cool, so a delicious psychological game of fact versus fiction takes place. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela take part the clever spy entertainment. October 17th, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema
